What is HGH?

What is this amazing substance, HGH? As its full name suggests, HGH is a hormone. Ernest Starling coined the term “hormone” in his 1905 paper, On the chemical correlation of the functions of the body.

A hormone is a substance made in one part of the body that can affect the activity of cells in another part of the body, sometimes even in a remote part of the body. In a way, hormones are like messengers, carrying a message from a gland, for example, to other cells of the body, instructing them to affect a particular activity. In the case of HGH, as long as the levels are not excessive, the message is all good news.

HGH is produced in the anterior pituitary gland which is located at the base and towards the center of the brain, back in behind the eyes. The pituitary is one of the endocrine glands which means it secretes its “message” directly into the bloodstream.

Increasing HGH Levels

By the time we reach the age of 25, the pituitary has already begun to release less HGH into the bloodstream. By age 40, our HGH levels are only about 40% of what they were in our prime, around age 20. Since the evidence strongly indicates that these lower levels of HGH play an integral part in the aging process and that elevating these levels of HGH back to where they were in our younger years can offset the effects of aging, the trick is to do that-to raise the levels of HGH.

Studies have shown that injections of HGH do that very effectively. However, this method of treatment has a number of drawbacks. For one thing, injections are very expensive, costing anywhere from hundreds of dollars to a few thousand dollars per month, depending on the individual’s requirement. Also, the injections are generally carried out in a clinical or hospital setting by medical personnel and require considerable testing and monitoring to keep the proper dosages on track to avoid side effects. Inside the stomach and intestines we produce enzymes that break HGH down into its component amino acids, just as they would do with a nice steak or bowl of cottage cheese, or any other foodstuff rich in protein.

Also, because of the large size of the HGH molecule, it cannot be absorbed through the skin. Some preparations of HGH have been produced for absorption into the bloodstream through vessels under the tongue, but this method of delivery also has drawbacks, conferring results that are unreliable.

A secretogogue is a substance, chemical, or nutrient which will by its nature encourage a gland to release a hormone. The consequences of achieving this with HGH, of course, are raised levels of HGH in the body.

As we go into middle age and beyond, the pituitary does not stop producing HGH, it just releases less of it into the bloodstream. A particular style of secretogogue can trigger the release of HGH and in this way is able to bring about higher HGH levels than were occurring previously.

This means for a forty year old, whose HGH levels have been on the decrease for about twenty years, a secretogogue can raise the concentration of HGH in the bloodstream to a more youthful level. Because secretogogues bring about the release of HGH from the body’s own pituitary, at the body’s own rate, the levels of HGH remain subject to governance by the hypothalamus and its feedback loop. Consequently, there is little or no possibility of artificially raising the serum levels of HGH to anything above normal resulting in little or no possibility of bringing on serious side effects.

Amino Acids

There are a number of substances or agents that act as secretogogues. Some of the most effective and most commonly used are amino acids. Amino acids, we will recall, are the building blocks of protein. Of the twenty-one amino acids needed as part of our physiological requirements, nine of them our bodies cannot make on their own and must be supplied through diet.

Many of the amino acids that serve as HGH releasers have a synergistic effect when used in combination.
